Note: Children enrolled in the 4's program can also enroll in the mixed-age program to create a 5-day schedule.
A mixed-age community offers well-documented benefits for both the younger and older children. Theorists have long known that younger children learn differently (and at times better) from older peers than they do from teachers. At the same time, older children take on a role of having expertise that others look up to and seek out, generating a greater sense of competence and agency in the environment than occurs with same-aged peers alone. The adage that “teaching is the best way to learn” is true even for our youngest learners, and the older children naturally use this dynamic to cement and further extend the knowledge gained across all experiences.
Our mixed-age classes are held on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. Two teachers and up to 14 students, along with a parent volunteer, participate in the class each day. Children enrolled in the 4's program can also enroll in the mixed-age program to create a 5-day schedule.
In order to enroll, children must turn 3 before December 31st. Children must be toilet trained, in underpants, before the start of school.
